Reaching “Epic” Proportions

The Local Tourist

epic: (ep-ic, adj.)
1. Surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size; 2. Heroic and impressive in quality.

Epic Burger, a new joint in the north part of the South Loop or in the south part of the Loop, is aptly named. The burgers are of grand size; with its free range and antibiotic free beef and chicken, locally baked buns, fresh-cut fries, and real fruit smoothies the quality surpasses the usual sandwich and fry fare; and founder David Friedman’s plans to expand not just nationally but internationally are definitely impressive.

Cheap, Cheap?

DailyCandy.com - May 23 2008

Cheap, quick, tasty: the holy trifecta of the fast-food burger.

Greasy, fatty, mass-produced: You get what you pay for.

At the newly opened Epic Burger, you get exactly what you pay for: fresh, locally sourced, delish burgers cooked by a professional chef.

The menu is brief, but each item (a burger topped with a toasted egg, a portobello mushroom sandwich, a giant $2 bag of hand-cut fries) is perfected so everyone goes home happy. Especially when it’s all topped off with an sinful chocolate shake.

Epic Cure

Time Out Chicago - May 22–28 2008

It isn’t quite as hardcore as Morgan Spurlock’s self-inflicted agony, but restaurateur David Friedman’s experience as a culinary consultant to various fast-food chains gave him a greater understanding of the American meat industry. That understanding grossed him out enough that all of the beef he’ll use at his new spot, Epic Burger, will come from all-natural, drug-free cows under the Coleman Natural label.

Mindful Meditation

Chicago Magazine - May 14 2008

We’re salivating over Epic Burger (517 S. State St.; 312-913-1373), a 75-seat fast casual spot from David Friedman (Blackhawk Lodge) opening May 16th. The menu consists of two burgers, three sandwiches, fresh-cut fries seasoned with sea salt, and little else. Epic burgers ($6), which are fresh ground, hand-packed, and cooked fresh to order, come with handcrafted Wisconsin Cheddar, horseradish Havarti, or buttermilk blue cheese.

Fast food's eco-tude

Columbia Chronicle - February 25 2008

By Becky Schlikerman, Associate Editor

Columbia students and South Loop residents will soon have an eco-friendly, hearty new option for dining out.

Epic Burger, a fast food joint, is scheduled to open in early May at 525 S. State St. in the same building as the University Center. Owner David Friedman said the restaurant will be “fast casual,” serving all-natural burgers, sandwiches, fries and shakes among other items, made from locally-grown ingredients.
